As winter passes us by and spring brings with it some – hopefully – good weather, many Londoners will be looking for options for a day out or two. Where better, we ask you, than somewhere dubbed the ‘perfect’ market town?

Granted it’s a bit of a way to Nottinghamshire’s Southwell, but it’s on very few Londoners’ radar. As such, it’s not quite as crammed with influencers as other places closer to home have become

According to The Telegraph, a survey by money-saving website Savoo.co.uk deemed Southwell as the best market town in the country because of how ‘affordable’ and ‘Instagrammable’ it is.

The town boasts many historic buildings, including Georgian and Victorian architecture. One of the most prominent landmarks is the Southwell Minster, a magnificent medieval cathedral renowned for its stunning architecture, particularly its Norman and Gothic features. The minster is also famous for Chapter House – known for its intricate stone carvings – and The Bishop’s Palace which has a private garden.

There is also the Workhouse, a National Trust property known as the best-preserved example of a traditional workhouse across the country, the Saracen’s Head, a charming 16th-century inn now used as a hotel and restaurant, and Norwood Park Country House, a restored country estate.

The town is also home to Southwell Racecourse, a horse racing venue located just outside the town centre popular with jockeying enthusiasts. It has been called one of the ‘premier sporting venues in the East Midlands’ and is one of six racecourses in the country to have an all-weather track.

Of course, being a market town they have a market square that is integral to the town’s nature.

They have markets in Market Square every Saturday from 8am that attract residents and visitors alike. Not only does it do food and drinks but there are special craft markets amongst others which also come down to the square throughout the year.

How to get there

You can get a train from King’s Cross to Newark Northgate and then a train from there into Southwell. Via that most direct route, it would take just over two hours to get there. Alternatively, you can get two trains to Fiskerton and then walk or taxi into Southwell. You can find tickets for trains there via Trainline.

To drive it would take just over three hours. You take the M1 out of London before changing to the A46 around Leicester. Follow this before turning onto the A6097 and then onto Southwell Road.
