DOUGLASVILLE, Ga – A hidden camera FOX 5 I-Team investigation takes the shine off some big promises made to Georgia homeowners about solar power.

With rising energy prices, you may be paying closer attention to those ubiquitous ads on social media:

“The government will cover the cost to install solar.”

“Get paid to go solar!”

“Reduce or even eliminate your electric bill by using solar energy.”

Amie and Nathan Tatro of Lafayette saw the same ads. So they signed a contract with Power Home Solar — now Pink Energy — to outfit their home with solar panels, a deal that cost $91,000 with monthly installments over 25 years.

“It’s not turned out to be what was promised,” Amie admitted. “Almost everything he said turned out not to be true.”

  1. Solar is nothing but a joke. The companies start making the panels then either go out of business or shut down and reopen under other names because the panels only last about 5 years so when they fail you can’t get replacement parts or new panels

  2. These people are getting screwed badly. These prices are unbelievable. And, yeah the utilities are part of the scam. Some want to charge u for their power and not pay u for what u produce. This stuff is especially true in the SE. My solar cost me about $12000, but I put it in myself. Batteries are the biggest part of the cost. Don't even connect your system to the utilities. You are not working for them.

  3. As an engineer who works in energy and has studied this stuff mostly from reading online and my take on this is that Solar power is not bad at all but It may not be for everyone. Some people use such little power and live in places that city power is affordable and very reliable. Another thing is that if you do have a home that uses a lot of power, you really need to invest in batteries to collect power when you are not using it and to use it when you are not collecting it. THIS power needs to be saved locally before selling it to the utility which is the real enemy. It is true that you don't get paid an EVEN RATE. They charge you a lot more than what they pay you for the same power. Also, some utilities do not offer net metering like the video says. You need to verify this. last but not least, DO NOT OVERPAY for the system. This video showcases (more cherry picking by the media as usual) people who have paid 50k or 96k for a system that should not cost more than 15 to 20k. So the enemy is actually the sales people who give you a bad deal.

  4. Reading some of these comments really make me laugh. You all would rather throw away money to the utility company that is a never ending payment then pay for a system β€œif set up correctly at the usage your home is using” is insane. Solar is an amazing thing if the system is set up correctly and you get with the right company. Solar panels do not last 25 years, the new REC 405KW panels can last anywhere between 50-70 years and will still have full functionality after year 25 at a 92% production. People switch to solar to save money, build equity in their home and to go green. People complain how these systems aren’t recyclable which they will find a solution for that soon as 15% of the system are recycled. But fossil fuels and oil aren’t recycled they just kill our atmosphere for decades to come. Most companies out here today are actually making a great thing become a worst investment with how high they sell the systems for to pocket the commission for their sales people but that’s why you shop different companies to get the best price, just like most of you do when you go out and buy a vehicle. For instance you will spend 4 hours with a salesman at a dealership, you’ll get the price and leave to β€œgo to lunch” but in all reality your leaving to go shop the price you were given so you can get a better deal. Solar is the new to this world and more and more people will do it and while they pay $200 for a fixed amount that never goes up, you’ll deal with inflation and have a triple the amount bill in 10 years. Do research before considering switching your making this sound like this is the worst investment for people when in all reality it’s not if the SYSTEM IS SET UP CORRECTLY AND WITH THE RIGHT COMPANY. πŸŽ‰

  5. I had 5kw system install in 2022 on a rack mounted system. Because it was a rack mounted system, and a good distance away from the house the cost was a lot higher. However, this gave me the expansion capability and I went from 21 panels the company installed to now 70 panels. I did two expansions on my own. The size system they will install will always be under sized. Always go much larger than you think and that's the safer bet. I still need an additional 60 panels and 9 batteries in order to be independent of the grid for the most part. You need a lot of excess production in the winter since days are shorter and excess production in the summer especially if you're in warmer climates and the AC will be running a lot. Do not depend on met metering. Eventually net metering will be a thing of the past. Always plan for batteries to revolve the lack of net metering.

  6. its so funny watching Republicans πŸ₯ΎπŸ‘…ers struggle to understand why capitalism and the "market" isn't producing or delivering the things that they pink swore promise they would. literally children upset the game they violently defend is rigged against them. how do you imagine these companies make money, by doing the right thing and ensuring all their promises are actually kept or by overselling and under delivering? grow up, not one of this so called issues has anything to do with "solar" and everything to do with capitalism and corrupt politics, corrupted by lobbying money from capitalists.

  7. A Con is a con , so called technology gets miss use or abused like EV's … our phones are not really private as we think they're are but we make do for many other reasons ! Keep things simple and basic as possible in this greedy evil world where scammers abroad operate behind their screens or local ! Stay safe πŸ’ͺπŸ’―

  8. Which is more toxic? Coal fired power plants or toxic solar panels that can't be disposed of in land fills. Look forward to being taxed for the disposal of these panels and the potential of having home insurance cancelled.

  9. I am gathering up people on several social media websites who have been scammed i need as many as i can get for a class action lawsuite i already have many people who are willing. The more, the better of a chance we have at winning our case.

  10. I represent an European Based PV solar company. we are charging our customers in average around 1.5k -1.8k euro / kwp. That includes materials, full installation, legalisation and subsidies paperwork. We provide clients with 30 page reports of energy production vs consumption, shading analysis, ROI table for the following 25 years with very precise data by using top pv design software in the industry. We also have here companies trying to break the bank and charge non technical customers tons of money by using cheap materials or not even respecting the electrical normative of the country. By the pdf offers you showed in the video, we even know what open source proposal software they use, which are not very precise in shading analysis nor in proper technical detailing or finanancial analysis. those are used for rapid quoting, which shows how much they do care for they possible future clients. Unfortunately in US you are focusing too much on the money reason why even a visit to your doctor can cost you thousands while in europe we are getting universal health or even very low cost private insurance. Funny how a PV system in USA costs triple than Europe, while you have the largest consumer market. it should be all the other way around when comes to pricing.

  11. A friend had these put on his house. Payments over a 20 year period. Guess what the average lifespan of a solar panel system is? You guessed it, 20 years. What a rip off. I tried to warn him. Now he's stuck paying $40,000 off over 20 years. And if he sells his house the new buyers aren't required to take over payments so he would still have to pay the balance. Please people, put solar in yourself if you want but avoid these companies.

  12. Solar bros lie like rugs. Always go with your gut. Solar does work but each scenario is different because each home is different. Former military is a plus when dealing with salespeople. Ask for a veteran. Much less likely to lie to your face.
